  1. Becoming a volunteer examiner (VE) is a relatively straightforward process.
  2. Once the FCC's minimum requirements have been met, becoming a VE can
  3. be as simple as completing an application form and sending it to
  4. the coordinating VEC.
  5.  
  6. In order to become an ARRL-accredited VE, prospective applicants must 
  7. follow this process:
  8.  
  9. 1. Each applicant must meet the minimum requirements which include:
  10.  
  11.     A. Must be 18 years of age or older;
  12.  
  13.     B. Must currently hold an FCC-issued Amateur Radio Advanced 
  14.         or Extra class license.  A CSCE which indicates that
  15.           an upgrade had been earned is not acceptable for
  16.         accreditation purposes.
  17.  
  18.     C. Must not have a conflict of interest due to ownership
  19.         interest in, or employment by, any company or other
  20.         entity which manufactures or distributes equipment
  21.         used in conjuction with amateur station transmissions
  22.         or publications used in preparation for obtaining an 
  23.         amateur station license.  (Example, a Radio Shack sales
  24.         person would have a conflict of interest due to the fact
  25.         that Radio Shack sells Amateur Radio transceivers and 
  26.         study guides.)

  28. 2. Each applicant must complete and sign a VE Application, and must provide
  29.     a copy of their current Advanced or Extra class license.
  30.  
  31. 3. Each applicant must review our ARRL VE Training Manual and complete 
  32.     a questionnaire (our Open-Book Review) which includes questions
  33.     about VEC procedures and FCC Rules.  [Persons holding a current
  34.     accreditation with a different VEC are not required to complete
  35.     the Open-Book Review (since they are considered to have 
  36.     on-the-job training), but we encourage them to do so.  These 
  37.     applicants must provide a copy of their non-ARRL VE credentials 
  38.     with their application.]

  40. For those who seek ARRL VE accreditation, our ARRL/VEC VE Manual is 
  41. theirs to keep--and periodic updates are sent to them both through our VE
  42. Express newsletter and through periodic new manual editions.  For
  43. those who are not interested in becoming accredited, but would like a copy
  44. of our VE Manual, the cost of the manual is $10.

  46. Prospective VE Information Packages are available from the ARRL/VEC by 
  47. calling 800-927-7583 (203-666-1541 x202), or writing us at ARRL/VEC, 
  48. Prospective VE Information Request, 225 Main St, Newington CT 06111 USA.

  50. Applications must be submitted to us at the above address (or faxed 
  51. to 203-665-7531) when completed.  Be sure that the VE Application, 
  52. Open-Book Review (if required) and current FCC license copy (and non-ARRL 
  53. accreditation credentials if applicable) are submitted to us at the 
  54. time of application.

  56. Accreditation processing takes about three weeks.  If credentials 
  57. are required within a shorter timeframe, we will be glad to try 
  58. to meet your needs.  Verbal authorization can be obtained over the phone.
  59. Whenever possible, however, please plan ahead so that we may give all 
  60. applicants the best service possible.

  62. Once accredited, we can help you locate other VEs in your area.  If there
  63. may not be an active VE Team to convenient to you, forming your own team 
  64. may be an alternative for your area--especially if your area is underserved.
