- Becoming a volunteer examiner (VE) is a relatively straightforward process.
- Once the FCC's minimum requirements have been met, becoming a VE can
- be as simple as completing an application form and sending it to
- the coordinating VEC.
-
- In order to become an ARRL-accredited VE, prospective applicants must
- follow this process:
-
- 1. Each applicant must meet the minimum requirements which include:
-
- A. Must be 18 years of age or older;
-
- B. Must currently hold an FCC-issued Amateur Radio Advanced
- or Extra class license. A CSCE which indicates that
- an upgrade had been earned is not acceptable for
- accreditation purposes.
-
- C. Must not have a conflict of interest due to ownership
- interest in, or employment by, any company or other
- entity which manufactures or distributes equipment
- used in conjuction with amateur station transmissions
- or publications used in preparation for obtaining an
- amateur station license. (Example, a Radio Shack sales
- person would have a conflict of interest due to the fact
- that Radio Shack sells Amateur Radio transceivers and
- study guides.)
-
- 2. Each applicant must complete and sign a VE Application, and must provide
- a copy of their current Advanced or Extra class license.
-
- 3. Each applicant must review our ARRL VE Training Manual and complete
- a questionnaire (our Open-Book Review) which includes questions
- about VEC procedures and FCC Rules. [Persons holding a current
- accreditation with a different VEC are not required to complete
- the Open-Book Review (since they are considered to have
- on-the-job training), but we encourage them to do so. These
- applicants must provide a copy of their non-ARRL VE credentials
- with their application.]
-
- For those who seek ARRL VE accreditation, our ARRL/VEC VE Manual is
- theirs to keep--and periodic updates are sent to them both through our VE
- Express newsletter and through periodic new manual editions. For
- those who are not interested in becoming accredited, but would like a copy
- of our VE Manual, the cost of the manual is $10.
-
- Prospective VE Information Packages are available from the ARRL/VEC by
- calling 800-927-7583 (203-666-1541 x202), or writing us at ARRL/VEC,
- Prospective VE Information Request, 225 Main St, Newington CT 06111 USA.
-
- Applications must be submitted to us at the above address (or faxed
- to 203-665-7531) when completed. Be sure that the VE Application,
- Open-Book Review (if required) and current FCC license copy (and non-ARRL
- accreditation credentials if applicable) are submitted to us at the
- time of application.
-
- Accreditation processing takes about three weeks. If credentials
- are required within a shorter timeframe, we will be glad to try
- to meet your needs. Verbal authorization can be obtained over the phone.
- Whenever possible, however, please plan ahead so that we may give all
- applicants the best service possible.
-
- Once accredited, we can help you locate other VEs in your area. If there
- may not be an active VE Team to convenient to you, forming your own team
- may be an alternative for your area--especially if your area is underserved.
-
- Feel free to contact our VE Hotline for any needs you may have.
